aBout In The Company of Poets

In The Company of Poets Magazine first hit the scene back in the early 1990s, and quickly grew to become an international platform for poetry and creative expressions. It included a readership that reached far beyond the United States to places such as Guam, China, Africa, Athens, Zapopa and many other locations, with as many submissions long before the ease of the internet.

It featured the works of artists such as Avotcja, Lee Williams, and Maya Angelou's son, Guy Johnson, presenting an opportunity for both known and unknown artists to become published. Its introduction of the "Poetry Joust" changed the face of poetry competitions in the Bay Area, taking competitions from $25 grand prizes to $1000; providing an opportunity for a poet to earn real money in competition. To date poetry competitions have modeled themselves after In The Company of Poets Magazine.

Endorsed by individuals such as Maya Angelou, Dr. Nathan Hare, Dr. Julia Hare, and the family of the late Alex Haley, In The Company of Poets (ITCOP),  was the recipient of a Proclamation from the Office of the Mayor, Oakland, California's then Mayor Elihu Harris for its Alex Haley Creative Writing Scholarship Fund, and received special recognition from then Governor Pete Wilson.

A spin-off from the popular magazine format, we are pleased to introduce to the creative writing community the "In The Company of Poets & Writers" TV Show.
